Technical Details
Power Line Telecommunications (PLC) is a technology that allows
broadband telecommunications services to be delivered over existing
power lines.
This technology is based on the use of IP
(Internet Protocol) so as to offer services such as Internet
access, phone service (based on voice over IP (VoiIP)), teleconference, instant messaging,
virtual private networks, TV over Internet...
The main advantage of this technology is the use of the electric-power
system as an Internet access network for the end users. The only
other technology with such potential is ADSL. Both technologies
work on an existing network by installing new equipment in the
user’s home as well as in the medium-to-low voltage transformer
station (PLC) or in the telephone exchange site (ADSL).
