Project description
CENTELLES-PLC is a pilot test to set
up a telecommunications network in the town of Centelles. www.centelles.org
Since the beginning of the 20th century, Centelles has its own power
supply system. Now, at the beginning of the 21st century, electrical
technology applied to telecommunications allows the provision
of telecommunications services over power lines.
This technology,
known as PLC (Power Line
Communications) and also
as BPL (Broad Band Communications) in the USA, was firstly designed
for internal data transmission in electricity companies and has developed
into a viable, high-quality alternative to deliver broadband services
to end users.
Regarding the development of this technology, CENTELLES-PLC
project is a great achievement, provided that the first network
using second-generation
technology will be established in Centelles, with five times faster
data access than previous systems, and supporting high-quality voice
services.
This pilot test aims to check the operation of the system
in a mixed urban structure, consisting of apartment buildings (vertical
design)
as well as single-family homes (horizontal design).
